Nestled at 617 N. Sherman Ave, Lola's Hi/Lo Lounge brings a unique "Wisconsin fancy" twist to the HiFi bar concept. This 60s-inspired venue blends high-end sound and finishes with quality food and cocktails, all wrapped in a no-frills attitude that aims to fill you with the warmth of home. We sat down with Matt Gerding, one of the owners, to get the inside scoop on this new Madison hot spot.

The story of Lola's began when Matt's wife, Tori, introduced him to her hometown bar - Lola's Tomcat Lounge in St. Nazianz, WI. The shag carpet, Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, and stiff drinks captured Matt's imagination. Inspired by 88-year-old owner Lola Otto, who still bartends nightly, Matt and Tori partnered with Evan Dannells to bring their "Hi/Lo" concept to life, adding a touch of class to a strip mall bar.

As one of four managing partners, Matt oversees daily operations, focusing on marketing, music programming, and new projects. He takes pride in creating a space where attention to detail shapes the guest experience and allows people to easily connect. "She's a vibe," the team likes to say, emphasizing their commitment to music, food, and cocktail programs that evoke a playful sense of nostalgia.

Music is at the heart of Lola's often featuring a mix of local and regional DJs playing vinyl. Every Monday is Motown Monday. Wednesdays feature Vinyl Listening Parties, where classic albums are played from start to finish. Thursdays bring world music, while Fridays are all about jazz, funk and soul. Saturdays mix it up with disco, 80s, and 90s tunes. For Matt and the other partners, introducing people to new music and celebrating its history is a particular joy.

While the atmosphere draws people in, Lola's food and drink keep them coming back. Signature dishes include Pork & Chive Dumplings and tavern-style pizza - thin crust, square-cut, and packed with flavor. The bar excels in classic cocktails, with their Old Fashioned (a must in the Midwest!), Manhattan, and Passion Star Martini being crowd favorites.

Since opening in November 2023, Lola's has quickly become part of the Madison community. They host various events and activities that welcome in a wide range of clientele. "Spin & Give" nights help raise money for local causes like the Children's Hospital and the Madison Reading Project.

Looking ahead, Matt envisions Lola's becoming a Madison institution - a place that feels like it's been part of the city for years. Their recent win as Best New Restaurant in Madison Magazine is a promising start. With plans to open "Lola's Sidecar," a private event space next door, Lola's is set to become a fixture in Madison's restaurant scene for years to come.
