Since its inception in 2013, Madison Reading Project has been a vital force in the community, fostering a love for reading among diverse young readers by providing free books and literacy resources. The headquarters, located at 1337 Greenway Cross #186, serves as a hub for storing and distributing a wide range of books tailored to every young reader. In the current year alone, Madison Reading Project has proudly distributed an impressive 102,322 books to the community. As the organization approaches 2024, it looks forward to celebrating its upcoming 10th anniversary.

The journey began when Executive Director and founder Rowan Childs recognized a gap in literacy rates and accessibility to proper reading resources. The vision was to make reading more engaging at a young age and create opportunities for families to access free books. This garnered significant community support, with many individuals contributing financially or donating books. It eventually led to the nonprofit's establishment, shaping it into what it is today. Madison Reading Project now has 15 dedicated staff members and hundreds of volunteers dedicated to sharing the love of reading

With continued success, Madison Reading Project offers a variety of programs benefiting the community across different age groups. The My First Pages program targets 0-5 year-olds, connecting families and educators with new books and literacy resources. The partnership with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library also provides children five years old and under with one book per month delivered to their residence, serving over 10,000 kids this year alone. The Books for Educators program allows K-12 teachers and social workers to schedule free shopping appointments, selecting up to 25 free books per year. In its inaugural year of in-person shopping, the program has already served over 1,000 educators.

Madison Reading Project extends its impact through initiatives such as the Free Book Fair, reaching specific in-need communities, and Little Free Libraries stationed throughout Dane County neighborhoods. The iconic Big Red Reading Bus has become synonymous with the group's outreach efforts. Due to its success, they are thrilled to announce the addition of a second bus coming in May. The buses, busy with children's program sites, community events in the summer, and school programs during the academic year, significantly expand the organization's reach.

There are many ways to get involved, including donating new or like-new books, volunteering at their location or with programs, and sponsoring local events. The Read(y) to Wear fashion show, where outfits are crafted from paper, stands as the major fundraiser, raising $85,000 in 2023. The organization eagerly anticipates another successful show this June.
