October marks the onset of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Alarming statistics reveal that a significant portion of Madison's homicides, approximately 40%, can be directly attributed to domestic violence, and the actual figure may be even higher, considering that only 25% of such incidents are reported.

Since its inception in 1977, Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) has been unwavering in its commitment to the Dane County community, striving to raise awareness, provide valuable resources, and advocate for survivors and their families. While DAIS is currently located at 2102 Fordem Ave, it started in secrecy, originating in a church basement. Today, DAIS seeks to openly engage the entire community, emphasizing its presence and accessibility. While the stigma surrounding domestic violence has evolved over time, more survivors now feel empowered to seek help.

DAIS initiates its services with a call or text to their 24-hour Help Line (Call 608.251.4445 or Text 608.420.4638). From there, a DAIS Help Line Advocate works with survivors on crafting a Safety Plan, a crucial step for leaving an abusive relationship. These plans involve practical steps like packing essentials, securing an extra key, establishing code words, and planning transportation, recognizing that this phase can often be the most dangerous. Once connected with DAIS, survivors and families can access a range of advocates. Legal Advocates offer guidance, legal advice, and courtroom support (though not serving as appointed lawyers). Case Managers help survivors with healthcare, employment opportunities, secure housing, and financial concerns. Parent and Child Youth Advocates provide parents with respite, allowing them to meet with other advocates and offering trauma-informed care to help manage the challenges of traumatic family dynamics.

DAIS operates from the Fordem Ave location, offering resources to anyone reaching out through the Help Line. Their shelter accommodates up to 60 individuals, providing a safe space for survivors and their families to transition to independent living. Specialized facilities include kids' centers for children of all ages, a pet center in collaboration with the Sheltering Animals of Abuse Victims (SAAV) for housing pets, and an in-house hair salon where individuals can regain their self-identity. With a 24/7 onsite staff, the shelter's goal is to facilitate survivors and their families in securing safe housing.

DAIS relies on private funding, which grows in importance each year as the number of cases continues to rise. Contributions of new items like box fans, pack and plays, sweaters, slippers, and more are also welcome. Volunteers are essential, with opportunities including answering Help Line calls, organizing donations, and participating in the children's program. DAIS offers Prevention Training to various community entities, such as offices, schools, church groups, salons, and more, which covers warning signs of abuse, risk reduction, and strategies to change social norms perpetuating violence.

Throughout the year, DAIS hosts social events and tabling activities, where advocates engage with the community, spreading awareness of DAIS' initiatives, fundraising opportunities, and ways to contribute. The "Adopt a Family" program allows individuals to select a family assisted by DAIS and provide them with gifts during the holidays. The ongoing success of DAIS hinges on dedicated volunteers, staff, and the continuous support of the community. Mary Donahue, Director of Development and Communications, envisions a future where DAIS's services are no longer required, but for now, the organization remains an indispensable asset to the Dane County community.
