Escape to the Weary Traveler Freehouse for an unforgettable experience of live music, well-crafted cocktails, delicious food, and an all-around charming atmosphere. Located at 1201 Williamson Street near downtown Madison, this historic neighborhood bistro has been a beloved part of the community for over 20 years. Kyle Martin recently joined ownership, along with Jeff Schmidt, who has been the bartender at Weary for over 15 years.

Kyle, originally from Watertown, WI, graduated from UW-Madison in 2004. Weary Traveler Freehouse played a significant role in his college experience, serving as a go-to destination for great food and good vibes. After college, Kyle embarked on a career in the restaurant industry in New York City, where he spent 18 years honing his skills. Despite his time away, he regularly returned to Madison and frequented Weary. Eventually, the previous owner recognized Kyle as an ideal candidate to carry on the restaurant's legacy while incorporating modern ideas. Today, they are proud to have preserved the original charm and comfort that Weary Traveler brings to the community while embarking on exciting new ventures, such as catering.

One of the standout menu items at Weary Traveler Freehouse is the renowned Bob's Bad Breath Burger, which has earned several awards. Additionally, the restaurant has recently introduced a brunch menu, featuring favorites like the Brandy Old Fashioned French Toast. Weary is a perfect venue for various events, including happy hours and their popular Thursday night live music performances. Moreover, Weary Travels is taking their exceptional food and enjoyable experiences to new heights through catering outside events, like Park Bank’s recent Night in the Park.

As a historic restaurant on Williamson Street, Weary Traveler Freehouse is committed to giving back to the community that surrounds it. This year, they proudly participated in O'Keeffe Middle School's “Top Chef Competition,” where they mentored 10 students in creating a menu and experiencing the workings of a restaurant kitchen. The Weary Traveler emerged as the competition's victor, claiming 1st place!

At its core, Weary Traveler Freehouse strives to be a haven for people from all walks of life—a safe space where creativity and enjoyment thrive alongside delectable food and specialty drinks. The restaurant aims to bring together new ideas and cultures while staying true to its roots. With its expanded catering services and unwavering commitment to excellence, Weary Traveler Freehouse continues to be a treasured destination for locals and visitors alike.
